Death Becomes Me

Posted in Personal
Today is my brother's 30th birhday. He is the youngest of my older brothers, and the only one I can really relate to. That, and the fact he has set an agelimit of 18 to this party, is the reason I am actually looking forward to a party with family members for the first time in ages.

From what I gather, my brother and his wife have been planning this shindig for awhile. They've rented a big cabin-esque villa on the outskirts of town, the caterers are cooking something related to the whole hunting theme of the cabin, like deer and bear, and his wife has hired a "karaoke-DJ" for entertainment. Oh, and he and our dad took a trip to Estonia last weekend, packed his station wagon with beer, cider, wines and other yummies.

But the best part is that this is a costume party, and for the first time ever, I have a perfect costume.

I am Death!

And this is the part where 95% of you go "*sigh* That's so morbid, that's so predictable, that's so Kristian". But it isn't, not really. Of course death is a sad occasion, but the character of Death is rarely portrayed as an evil being. But neither is he good. He is, in the truest form, neutral, because he is the only one who's law extends from beggars to emperors and, even on the rarest occasions, other divine beings.

I AM DEATH, NOT TAXES. I COME ONLY ONCE.

My Death is based on Terry Pratchett's Death, who is, to me, the greatest Death ever created. As an anthropomorphication of a universal law, He has the power to move in time freely, He can twist the laws of nature around His bony little finger... and in His den, on His desk, among the codexes and hourglasses and skull ornaments... is a coffeemug with the poorly written words "World's Greatest Grandad". He is, as Twisty said, a truly down to earth bloke.

Despite His nature as a nearly divine being, He is bound by certain laws. He can neither take life or give life, beyond that which fate has already given, and is forbidden to interfere with the courses of destiny, even if it means destruction of all known reality. In recent times, however, He has begun to shown signs of... shall we call it, rebellious youth.

It would appear that His rule of Do NOT Interfere With Courses Of Destiny has been altered to Do NOT Interfere With Courses Of Destiny, Unless It Looks Like The Bad Guys Are Really Going To Win.

To that end Death uses His granddaughter Susan (daughter of Death's adopted child Ysabell) who, despite being of human heritage, has inherited some of His divine DNA. Susan and her grandad aren't exactly on the best terms, but she has come to accept the fact that when He tells her to do something, the fate of the universe tends to hang in the balance. This relationship allows Death to uphold His strict rule of no interference, while interfering the hell out of things.

There is also a peculiar dichotomy that has started to take hold of Him in the more recent books. While Death always maintains that He is a solitary being, above humans and needs no one, He has started to take on more and more human traits. It is not rare to find Him at a local gentleman's club having an after lunch nap, despite the fact that He neither eats or sleeps. But perhaps most of all, His human nature is displayed by Death of Rats, who is not a personification like Death Himself, but simply an aspect of His being, which He has allowed an independent existence for reasons He's not entirely sure of. This reason has been later speculated by others to be the very basic human need for companionship, or "Because at the end of the day, we all need someone to share the burden".

And that's my costume. The universal law of no emotions and strict rules, who harbors great feelings and desires, while breaking all the rules when need be.

Oh, and I get to wield a scythe... so there's that.

Death: WHO KNOWS WHAT EVIL LURKS IN THE HEARTS OF MEN?
Death of Rats: SQUEAK.
Death: WELL, OBVIOUSLY I DO.

Haha.

There was a Twilight Zone were death was a pretty alright guy. I think the episode goes something like, this guy spends the episode convincing this woman that it's alright to die. When she agrees it's revealed that she's been dead the whole time.. Something like that. It was a long time ago.

cool.
you gonna do face paint or a mask?
robes or a cloak?

birdsnest - 04:13 - 2008-May-17

SQUEE!!!

I'm so excited that you're Death, He's probably my most favouritest character on the Discworld, aside from maybe Nanny Ogg, or Carrot.

Have a thooooper time!

Twist - 04:14 - 2008-May-17

pfff....the family guy death is the bestest ever.

birdsnest - 04:32 - 2008-May-17

".the family guy death is the bestest ever. "

Norm MacDonald or Adam Carolla?

OgreJehosephatt - 05:19 - 2008-May-17

both.

birdsnest - 05:20 - 2008-May-17

Yay - I love being in the obscure 5 percentile :D

He's one of my favourite Pratchett characters, too. Mort was my introduction to the Discworld, and all five of the Death series are superb.

Frankly, he'd kick Family Guy Death's bony ass. You'd never catch the Death of the Discworld twisting his ankle.

Great idea! Couldn't have gone for a better costume :)

Hey, if you spot anybody in a Moomin costume... beat them down, take it and send it to me!

bitzky - 04:47 - 2008-May-18

So...has this party happened? Is it going to be soon? Where are the damn photos? We wanna see Death Dante...

texican - 10:06 - 2008-May-23

Party happened. Pictures to come, I promises.

dantesinferno - 08:01 - 2008-May-24

Yeah...what Rene said, we want to see pictures of "Death Dante", or "Dante Death"!

I dunno...I've been to enough costume parties and I've never seen "death" before. I'd say it's a pretty original idea. I guess you better hope that there's no one there that's had a recent death in their family!!

Rubicon - 10:27 - 2008-May-29

Michael - The costume was actually very well received. I will post pictures and a full story, as soon as I have good time and proper pictures (the pictures from my dad's cam were disfigured, I swear, pics will follow).
